Why the mist has to be painted

This is a painting made almost entirely of atmosphere. There is very little hard edge in it: the boats are a few strokes, the sun is a single warm note, and everything else is harbour haze. That haze is the hard part.

A print gives you grey-blue ink. A painter gives you layers — thin translucent passes of blue, grey and pale orange, each allowed to set before the next goes on, so the light appears to sit behind the surface rather than on it. That is the effect Monet was after, and it is the difference people notice immediately when they stand in front of one.

The painting itself

Monet painted it in 1872 from a window of the Hôtel de l'Amirauté in Le Havre, looking out at the harbour at dawn. When it was shown in 1874, the critic Louis Leroy wrote a sneering review saying the painting was unfinished — barely an "impression" of a sunrise. Monet and his colleagues took the insult as a badge, and the movement had its name.

Worth knowing if you are buying a copy: the sun is the same tone as the sky around it, which is exactly why it seems to pulse. Monet deliberately did not brighten it. A copy that makes the sun too orange has missed the point.

How our painters reproduce it

1. Composition and ground. The horizon and the boat positions are laid in thinly — the placement matters more than the detail.
2. Building the haze. Multiple thin passes of blue-grey, pale violet and grey-green, each dried before the next.
3. The sun and its reflection. A single warm orange note, matched in tone to the sky (not brighter), with the broken reflection below it in the water.
4. Drying and inspection. Then the canvas is checked for atmospheric depth and the correct restraint in the sun.

5. Pay the 30% balance, then we ship — tracked worldwide, rolled in a rigid tube or crated if framed.
