Why the roses need a brush, not a printer

Look closely at a Monet rose bush and you will see that no flower is actually drawn. Each bloom is two or three dabs of pink, red or white, left separate, so your eye assembles them into blossom from a few steps back. That is the entire trick of Impressionist flower painting.

A print blends those dabs into smooth pink mush. A painter keeps them separate and physical — so the bush keeps its sparkle and you can feel the individual marks with your fingertips. It is also why a hand-painted version never looks "flat" under lamplight the way a printed canvas does.

The painting itself

After he built the water garden at Giverny, Monet turned to the rest of the grounds with the same obsession. He had climbing roses trained over metal arches along the central path, and painted them repeatedly in the 1910s and 1920s — often looking straight up into the blossom, so the canvas fills with flowers and sky rather than showing a tidy garden view.

Those late garden canvases are looser than anything he had painted before: bigger strokes, warmer colour, less interest in detail. If you are choosing between this and the cool blues of the Water Lilies, the simple rule is that the roses bring warmth and the pond brings calm.

1. Composition and ground. The arch structure and the mass of foliage are blocked in first, matched to your canvas proportions.
2. Green underpainting. The leaf mass is established in several greens — Monet's foliage is never one flat green.
3. Blossom dabs. Each flower head is two or three loaded dabs of pink, red, cream and white, kept separate so the eye can blend them.
4. Drying and inspection. Layers need days to set, then the canvas is checked for warmth, blossom density and stroke character.

Gold suits the warm roses best; natural wood is softer; matte black makes the pinks read stronger in a contemporary room; or gallery-wrap with no frame. Quoted separately.

3. 70% deposit starts the painting — bank transfer, PayPal, credit card or Wise.
4. We send photographs of the finished painting. You approve before anything ships; if something clearly does not match your order notes, tell us and we adjust it.
5. Pay the 30% balance, then we ship — tracked worldwide, rolled in a rigid tube or crated if framed.
