Most people meet Sunflowers as a poster or a phone wallpaper, and in that flat form the painting loses its whole point. Van Gogh squeezed chrome yellow onto the canvas in loaded, directional strokes — sometimes straight from the tube — so that the surface has actual topography. Under room light, those ridges catch highlights and the flowers seem to turn toward you.
There is a test we encourage buyers to use on any "oil painting" they are offered: run a fingernail very gently across the surface. A hand-painted canvas feels like terrain. A print feels like glass.
The painting itself
Van Gogh painted the Sunflowers series in Arles in the south of France in 1888, preparing the yellow house for a visit from his friend Paul Gauguin. He wanted to prove that a painting built almost entirely from one colour — yellow, in every temperature from pale sulphur to deep orange — could still hold a whole composition together.
The challenge for any painter copying it is exactly that: paint the chrome yellow thin and the painting dies flat. It has to be built up in loaded layers, allowed to set, and then worked again. That is the slow part, and it is where a cheap studio quietly cuts corners.
How our painters reproduce it
Our studio is in Dafen Oil Painting Village, Shenzhen — the centre of hand-painted oil reproduction for more than thirty years. A Sunflowers here is not traced, projected or transferred. The painter works freehand from a high-resolution reference, in layers:
- Composition and ground. The canvas is toned and the vase and flower heads laid out in a thin underpainting, matching the original proportions to your chosen size.
- Colour build-up. The yellows are mixed in oil, not acrylic — only oil gives the same depth, slow blending and the slightly translucent glow Van Gogh got from chrome yellow.
- Impasto passes. The signature thick strokes go on last, loaded with paint, following the direction of the original's brushwork. This is the slowest and most skilful stage.
- Drying and inspection. Thick oil needs days to set properly. We let it. Then the finished canvas is checked against the reference for colour, composition and stroke character.
