Why this one is painted, not printed

Almond Blossom looks simple until you stand close to it. The sky is not a flat turquoise wash — it is worked in broken strokes of blue, green and pale violet. Every blossom is a small cluster of separate loaded dabs, each catching light differently. That is what makes the branches feel alive rather than decorative.

Printed versions flatten all of it into a single pale blue field with white dots. The difference is obvious in person, and it is why people who buy this painting for a child's room tend to come back and tell us so.

The painting itself

Van Gogh painted Almond Blossom in February 1890 in Saint-Rémy, while he was a patient at the asylum there. His brother Theo had written to say that Theo's son had been born — and that they had named the baby Vincent, after him. Van Gogh painted this as a gift for the child.

The almond tree was deliberate: it flowers earliest of all the fruit trees, so it stood for new life. You can read the whole mood of the painting in that choice — no black outlines, no churning sky, just pale blossom opening against a spring sky. It is the one major Van Gogh with no turbulence in it at all.

How our painters reproduce it

1. Composition and ground. The branching structure is laid out in a thin underpainting — the branch rhythm has to be right before any blossom goes on.
2. The sky. Worked in broken strokes of cerulean, viridian and pale violet rather than a flat mix, so the turquoise keeps its vibration.
3. Blossom by blossom. Each flower head is a cluster of dabs in white, pink and the palest yellow, painted with enough body to stand off the canvas. This is the most time-consuming stage.
4. Drying and inspection. Layers need days to set. The finished canvas is then checked against the reference for branch structure, sky colour and blossom density.

Where it hangs best

• Nursery and children's rooms — the most common choice; the palette is gentle and the subject is hopeful.
• Bedroom — pale and calm enough to live with; works above a headboard.
• Hallway and stairwell — the vertical branch structure suits a tall narrow wall.
• Clinics, waiting rooms, care homes — frequently ordered for exactly the same reason it was painted: it is restful.

Framing

A pale or natural wood frame keeps the spring feeling; matte black gives the turquoise more edge in a modern room; gold warms it for a traditional interior; or choose gallery-wrap with no frame. Quoted separately.
