Three textures in one painting

What makes this canvas hard to copy well is that it contains three completely different kinds of brushwork, and a print renders all three identically flat:

• The wheat — short, dry, repetitive strokes in yellow-greens and ochres, laid in the direction the wind would push them.
• The cypresses — dark, thick, rising strokes with real body, the heaviest paint in the picture.
• The sky — long swirling strokes of white and pale blue that move independently of everything below.

A painter who flattens any one of those loses the whole effect. Our painters treat them as three separate jobs on the same canvas.

The painting itself

Van Gogh painted this in June 1889 at Saint-Rémy, looking out from the asylum grounds at the Alpilles. The cypresses caught his eye from the start — he wrote that they were "as beautiful as an Egyptian obelisk," and he returned to them repeatedly that summer.

There are three versions; the best known is the one now in London. What all of them share is the sense that everything in the landscape is moving — the wheat, the trees, the clouds — while the composition stays perfectly balanced. That tension is why it holds a wall so well.

1. Composition and ground. The horizon, the cypress masses and the field bands are laid out first, matched to your chosen canvas ratio.
2. Sky first. The swirling cloud movement is established early, since it sets the mood for everything underneath.
3. Field, then trees. The wheat goes on in short broken strokes; the cypresses are then painted heavier and darker so they read forward.
4. Drying and inspection. Thick passages need days to set. The canvas is then checked for stroke character in all three zones.

Where it hangs best

• Above a sofa or long console — the horizontal format is made for wide walls.
• Study or home office — green is an easy colour to work beside.
• Hallway and stairwell — we can extend the ratio for a long narrow wall.
• Hotel corridors and boardrooms — a frequent hospitality choice at the larger sizes.

Framing

Walnut or natural wood suits the greens; matte black sharpens a contemporary room; gold warms the golds in the wheat; or gallery-wrap with no frame. Quoted separately.
