Why a hand-painted Van Gogh beats a print
Most people first meet Sunflowers or Cafe Terrace at Night as a flat image on a screen or a poster. What the poster cannot carry is texture — and with Van Gogh, texture is everything. He painted with thick, directional strokes of paint, sometimes squeezed straight from the tube, so that light catches the ridges of the surface and the whole painting seems to move. A print flattens all of that into ink dots. A hand-painted reproduction rebuilds it, stroke by stroke, in real oil paint on canvas.
There is a practical test, and we encourage it: run a fingernail gently across the surface. A hand-painted Van Gogh feels like terrain. A print feels like glass.
How our painters reproduce a Van Gogh
Our studio sits in Dafen Oil Painting Village, Shenzhen — the global center of hand-painted oil reproduction for over thirty years. A Van Gogh reproduction here is not traced or transferred. The painter works from a high-resolution reference of the original and paints freehand in layers:
- Composition and ground. The canvas is toned and the composition laid out in a thin underpainting, matching the original's proportions.
- Color build-up. Van Gogh's yellows, cobalt blues and viridians are mixed in oil — not acrylic — because only oil gives the same depth and slow blending.
- Impasto passes. The signature thick strokes go on last, loaded with paint, following the original's stroke direction. This is the slowest and most skillful stage, and it is where cheap studios cut corners.
- Drying and inspection. Thick oil layers need days to set properly. We let them. Then the painting is checked against the reference for color, composition and brushwork.
The Van Gogh works we paint most
These are the paintings our customers commission again and again — each one carries its own mood, and suits different rooms.
Sunflowers (the Arles series)
The single most-requested Van Gogh worldwide. The heavy chrome-yellow impasto is the challenge: painted thin, it dies. Ours is built up in loaded layers so the petals have real body. Suits kitchens, dining rooms, and anywhere that needs warmth. Paints well at every size from 30 × 40 cm up to 100 × 140 cm.

Cafe Terrace at Night
The deep ultramarine night sky against the glowing yellow terrace is Van Gogh's most famous color pairing — and the reason this painting is so popular for living rooms and lounges. The star field and the cobbled street reward a painter who takes their time with the stroke direction.

Almond Blossom
Painted for his nephew's birth, this is the gentlest Van Gogh — pale blue sky, white blossoms, Japanese-influenced composition. It is the top choice for nurseries, bedrooms and calm spaces, and the soft palette fits Scandinavian and light-filled interiors beautifully.

Wheat Field with Cypresses
All of Van Gogh's energy in one frame: swirling sky, rolling wheat, flame-like cypresses. This one suits large statement walls — at 90 × 120 cm or bigger it becomes the center of a living room. The swirling sky strokes must follow the original's flow or the painting loses its motion.

Three Sunflowers & Oleanders
Quieter takes on the floral theme — Three Sunflowers against a pale ground, and the Oleanders with their cool greens. Both are frequent requests for offices, hallways and gift orders, and both paint beautifully at modest sizes.

💬 Ask About a Van Gogh on WhatsAppChoosing the right size
Van Gogh originals are museum-scale, and a size that looks right in a museum can overwhelm a home wall. Here is the sizing table we use with customers every week:
| Wall / use | Recommended canvas size | Works well for |
|---|---|---|
| Desk, bedside, entry nook | 30 × 40 cm / 12 × 16 in | Almond Blossom, Three Sunflowers, Oleanders |
| Standard sofa wall (1.8–2.2 m sofa) | 60 × 80 cm / 24 × 32 in | Sunflowers, Cafe Terrace at Night |
| Living room statement wall | 90 × 120 cm / 36 × 48 in | Wheat Field with Cypresses, large Sunflowers |
| Lobby, dining hall, hotel | 120 × 160 cm / 48 × 63 in or larger | Wheat Field diptych, statement Cafe Terrace |
Any size can be painted, and we can slightly crop the composition to fit a wall that is taller than it is wide. If you are unsure, send a photo of the wall with rough dimensions on WhatsApp and we will recommend a size — this is free and takes a minute.
Frames
A reproduction is only as good as its frame. We offer:
- Gold leaf frame — the classic look for Sunflowers and floral works; makes the yellows richer.
- Matte black frame — modern, sharp contrast; ideal for Cafe Terrace at Night.
- Walnut wood frame — warm and neutral; suits Almond Blossom and calm interiors.
- Unframed gallery-wrap — the canvas is stretched on a deep wooden bar with painted edges, ready to hang with no frame at all.
Frames are quoted together with the painting so there are no surprises.
What affects the price
We quote per order rather than posting a price list, because three things genuinely change the cost:
- Size — the biggest factor. A 90 × 120 cm canvas takes far longer than a 60 × 80 cm one.
- Brushwork density — Van Gogh is the most labor-intensive of all the masters we reproduce. A Wheat Field with Cypresses at the same size as a calm Almond Blossom takes noticeably more studio hours.
- Frame — real wood frames (especially gold leaf) add to the total; gallery-wrap is the most economical.
Send us painting + size + frame on WhatsApp and you will have an exact quote — usually within the hour. No obligation.

FAQ
Are your Van Gogh paintings hand-painted or printed?
100% hand-painted with oil paints on artist-grade canvas by studio painters in Dafen Village. No printing, no canvas transfers. You can feel the impasto ridges with your fingertips.
Which Van Gogh paintings can you reproduce?
Any of them — Sunflowers, Cafe Terrace at Night, Almond Blossom, Wheat Field with Cypresses, The Starry Night, self-portraits, irises and more. Send the title or a screenshot and we will confirm.
How much does a hand-painted Van Gogh reproduction cost?
It depends mainly on size and brushwork density. Send us the painting, size and frame preference on WhatsApp and we reply with an exact quote, usually within an hour.
How long does it take to paint?
Most take 2–4 weeks depending on size and the studio queue. Van Gogh's thick impasto needs proper drying time between layers — we do not rush it. The timeline is confirmed in writing before any deposit.
Can I choose a custom size or frame?
Yes — any size, and we can slightly crop the composition to fit your wall. Frames available in gold, matte black, walnut, or unframed gallery-wrap.
How do I approve the painting before it ships?
When your painting is complete we send you photographs of the finished work. You approve first, then pay the 30% balance and we ship. If you want adjustments after seeing the photos, tell us and we adjust it.
Do you ship worldwide? Who pays import duties?
Yes — worldwide by tracked courier (typically DHL or FedEx), packed in a rigid tube or crate. Shipping is quoted separately. Import duties and taxes in your country are the buyer's responsibility (DAP).
Is buying a reproduction legal?
Yes. Van Gogh died in 1890; his work is in the public domain, so hand-painted reproductions are legal to commission and own worldwide. We sell them clearly as reproductions, never as originals.
