Price by canvas size

💬 Get a The Magpie Quote on WhatsAppWhy the shadows must be blue
There is almost no black or grey anywhere in the snow. Monet built the drifts in cream and pale rose, then painted every shadow in clean blues — the discovery that made impressionism possible. The magpie sits on the gate as the single dark note in the whole field.
Prints average those blues toward grey, and the snow goes dead — flat, cold, and heavy. Hand-painted, the shadow blues stay transparent and the snow keeps its warmth, so the canvas reads as morning light on snow rather than as a winter postcard. The thick impasto on the sunlit drifts also breaks the surface the way the original does.
There is a test we encourage buyers to use on any "oil painting" they are offered: run a fingernail very gently across the surface. A hand-painted canvas feels like terrain. A print feels like glass.
The painting itself
Monet painted it in the winter of 1868–69, working through deep snow at Étretat in Normandy with his canvases sometimes freezing before he could finish. It is one of around 140 snowscapes he made, and by common agreement the finest.
The Salon jury rejected it in 1869 — critics of the day found blue shadows absurd — yet within a generation the idea had remade landscape painting. The original measures 89 × 130 cm, so our most faithful sizes are 60 × 90 cm and 80 × 120 cm. The magpie itself is painted last, in a handful of precise strokes: get those wrong and the bird stops being a bird.
How our painters reproduce it
Our studio is in Dafen Oil Painting Village, Shenzhen — the centre of hand-painted oil reproduction for more than thirty years. A The Magpie here is not traced, projected or transferred. The painter works freehand from a high-resolution reference, in layers:
- Composition and ground. The canvas is toned and the main forms laid out in a thin underpainting, matching the original proportions to your chosen size.
- Colour build-up. The palette is mixed in oil, not acrylic — only oil gives the same depth, slow blending and the slightly translucent glow the original depends on.
- Impasto and surface passes. The signature strokes go on last, loaded with paint, following the direction of the original's brushwork. This is the slowest and most skilful stage.
- Drying and inspection. Layered oil needs days to set properly. We let it. Then the finished canvas is checked against the reference for colour, composition and stroke character.
Where it hangs best
Snow without black, shadows without grey — the painting that taught winter to hold light. Rooms our customers choose most often:
- Living room — a winter scene that adds light, not cold
- Bedroom — the blue-shadow palette reads calm at low light
- Dining room — cream and blue suits a neutral scheme
- Hospitality — lobbies and ski properties that want winter without gloom
Framing
Choose gold to echo the original's warmth, matte black for a contemporary room, walnut for a traditional interior, or no frame at all as a gallery-wrap canvas ready to hang. Frames are quoted separately and packed with corner protection.

How much does it cost?
Est. $369–$1499 depending on canvas size, from 16 × 20 in up to 47 × 63 in. Frame and shipping quoted separately.
