The Maharashtrian Lady — Hand-Painted Oil Reproduction

Painted to order in Dafen Village, Shenzhen · after Raja Ravi Varma · Public domain · Portrait

The Maharashtrian Lady holds one person under steady attention. Raja Ravi Varma is not flattering the sitter so much as registering them — the face is modelled with small, honest decisions rather than ideal features.

The painting itself

The Maharashtrian Lady holds one person under steady attention. Raja Ravi Varma is not flattering the sitter so much as registering them — the face is modelled with small, honest decisions rather than ideal features.

The Maharashtrian Lady. Our painter follows the same logic rather than copying a photograph of it: the shadow side of the face is mixed from colour rather than grey, which is where most copies go dead.

What a print loses

A printed face is grey in the shadows, and grey is why printed portraits look dead. Skin in shadow is warm, cool, greenish by turns — a painter mixes it, a press cannot.

PriceOn request

Every canvas is painted to order, so the quote follows your size, frame and destination rather than a fixed list. Tell us what you need on WhatsApp and we reply with an exact figure, usually within the hour. You are talking to the people who will actually paint it, not a middleman.

Sizing it

Nothing is pre-made, which means you pick the dimensions. The sizes below cover most requests:

Size (inches)Size (cm)Best for
30 × 24 in76 × 61 cmDining room, bedroom feature wall
24 × 20 in60 × 50 cmStudy, home office, above a desk
20 × 16 in50 × 40 cmBedroom, hallway, above a console
16 × 12 in40 × 30 cmA shelf, a small wall, a gallery group

Custom sizes are welcome — if your wall needs something between these, or larger, say so and we will quote it. Framing and freight are separate line items. Customs duties and import taxes are the buyer's responsibility (DAP).

Message us the dimensions you have in mind and we will come back with a figure.

Hanging it

In a hallway gallery wall, among smaller works — that is where this one settles. We do not crop to fit a stock size. The canvas is cut to the original's proportions, which matters if the composition is unusually wide or tall.

Questions worth asking

Why not just print it?

A print flattens the surface into a poster: the distance collapses and the highlights turn to grey. Paint keeps the depth and the texture the original was built from.

Does it come with a certificate of authenticity?

No, and we would be wary of anyone who issues one for a public-domain reproduction. What you receive is a hand-painted canvas and photographs of it before it ships.

What happens after I message you?

You tell us the painting, size and whether you want a frame. We quote, a painter starts on your canvas, and you get photographs before it ships.
