The picture's hierarchy is built on gold: the heavens, the crowns, the halos, the light shafts in the dome — laid as gilded areas that ornament the composition the way a manuscript is illuminated. Below, the figures are drawn in Botticelli's dancing linear style, every drapery a live contour.
Printed, the gold becomes yellow ink and the whole upper half goes dead. Hand-painted, our artists layer warm golds and ochres with lighter accents, so the circles of angels keep their glow, and the line work — three grazing shepherds, twelve dancing angels, demons swallowing into the rocks — stays sharp and deliberate.
There is a test we encourage buyers to use on any "oil painting" they are offered: run a fingernail very gently across the surface. A hand-painted canvas feels like terrain. A print feels like glass.
The painting itself
The Greek inscription translates roughly as a warning that this picture was made at the end of 1500, during the second woe of the Apocalypse, when the devil was loose on earth for three and a half years — Savonarola's apocalyptic arithmetic, painted by the greatest artist in Florence. Within a few years Botticelli's career had effectively ended. The picture left Italy and eventually reached the National Gallery in London.
It is a tall vertical, about 109 × 75 cm. Commissioned at 60 × 80 cm it makes a stunning seasonal piece for a hall or mantel wall, and 90 × 120 cm holds its own in a large room all year.

- Colour build-up. The palette is mixed in oil, not acrylic — only oil gives the same depth, slow blending and the slightly translucent glow the original depends on.
- Impasto and surface passes. The signature strokes go on last, loaded with paint, following the direction of the original's brushwork. This is the slowest and most skilful stage.
- Drying and inspection. Layered oil needs days to set properly. We let it. Then the finished canvas is checked against the reference for colour, composition and stroke character.
