Turner's The Fighting Temeraire — Hand-Painted Oil Reproduction

Painted to order in Dafen Village, Shenzhen · J. M. W. Turner, 1839 · Public domain · Est. $369–$1499

Turner exhibited The Fighting Temeraire at the Royal Academy in 1839. It shows HMS Temeraire — the ship that fought beside Nelson's Victory at Trafalgar — being towed up the Thames by a small, dirty paddle-steamer to her last berth to be broken up. The old warship is pale gold; the tug is black; the sun setting behind them burns a hole in the sky.

Why that sunset cannot be printed

Turner built the sky from thin, transparent scumbles over a light ground, so the light appears to come from behind the paint, and he put the brightest passage — the sun — directly against the darkest, the black funnel of the tug. That contrast is the entire drama. The water repeats the same movement with long horizontal strokes that carry the reflection right across the foreground.

A print has to resolve that sky into a smooth gradient, and it always loses the edge where the sun sits: the glow becomes a soft blur and the tug stops reading as black. Hand-painted in transparent layers over a pale ground, the light stays luminous and the contrast stays sharp.

There is a test we encourage buyers to use on any "oil painting" they are offered: run a fingernail very gently across the surface. A hand-painted canvas feels like terrain. A print feels like glass.

The painting itself

The Temeraire was launched in 1798 and fought at Trafalgar in 1805; she was towed from Sheerness to Rotherhithe in 1838 to be scrapped, and Turner almost certainly saw her go past. He shifted her masts and rigging for the composition and put the sun exactly where the real sunset would not have been — west, at the top of the Thames. In a 2005 poll run by the National Gallery and the BBC it was voted the greatest British painting.

She is about 91 × 122 cm. The practical note for buyers: because the light comes from behind, this picture needs a wall with its own light nearby — it glows under a lamp and goes dull in a dark corner.

How our painters reproduce it

Our studio is in Dafen Oil Painting Village, Shenzhen — the centre of hand-painted oil reproduction for more than thirty years. A The Fighting Temeraire here is not traced, projected or transferred. The painter works freehand from a high-resolution reference, in layers:

  1. Composition and ground. The canvas is toned and the main forms laid out in a thin underpainting, matching the original proportions to your chosen size.
  2. Colour build-up. The palette is mixed in oil, not acrylic — only oil gives the same depth, slow blending and the slightly translucent glow the original depends on.
  3. Impasto and surface passes. The signature strokes go on last, loaded with paint, following the direction of the original's brushwork. This is the slowest and most skilful stage.
  4. Drying and inspection. Layered oil needs days to set properly. We let it. Then the finished canvas is checked against the reference for colour, composition and stroke character.

Where it hangs best

The ship that won at Trafalgar, towed to be broken up, lit by a sunset that is almost too much. Rooms our customers choose most often:

Framing

Choose gold to echo the original's warmth, matte black for a contemporary room, walnut for a traditional interior, or no frame at all as a gallery-wrap canvas ready to hang. Frames are quoted separately and packed with corner protection.

Honest labelling: this is a faithful hand-painted reproduction on canvas, not an original and not a museum-licensed copy. J. M. W. Turner died in 1851, so the paintings are in the public domain, so commissioning a hand-painted copy is legal worldwide. We never sell it as anything else, and we do not issue fake certificates of authenticity.
