J. M. W. Turner — Hand-Painted Oil Reproductions

Turner painted light as a substance. His skies are thin transparent layers over a pale ground, so the glow comes from behind the paint rather than off it — the reason a Turner looks lit and a print of a Turner looks like a gradient. He was also painting weather and speed fifty years before anyone had a word for abstraction.

J. M. W. Turner paintings we have in stock

Every canvas below is painted by hand in oil on real artist canvas by our studio painters in Dafen Village, Shenzhen. Pick a size, pick a frame, and we send photographs of the finished painting for your approval before anything ships.

Honest labelling: these are faithful hand-painted reproductions, not originals and not museum-licensed copies. Turner died in 1851 and his work is in the public domain, so commissioning a hand-painted copy is legal worldwide. We never sell them as anything else and we issue no fake certificates of authenticity.

Why Turner's light cannot be printed

In The Fighting Temeraire the sun sits directly against the black funnel of the tugboat — the brightest note in the canvas against the darkest, with nothing between them. Turner built that sky in transparent scumbles, and the light comes from the ground showing through. A printer has to resolve the sky into a smooth gradient, and the edge where the sun sits is exactly what disappears.

In Rain, Steam and Speed almost nothing is solid. The train, the bridge and the rain are the same swirling strokes, scraped back and re-worked, and the surface has real ridges and hollows that throw their own shadows when lit from the side. That physical relief is what a print flattens away — and why so many people assume the painting is simply blurry.

How our painters reproduce Turner

  1. Pale ground. The canvas is prepared light, because the luminosity has to come from underneath.
  2. Thin first. Sky and atmosphere go down as transparent scumbles; opacity is saved for the last stages only.
  3. Keep the contrast. The darkest dark and the brightest light are preserved as an edge, not softened into each other.
  4. Scrape, don't blur. For the weather passages, paint is lifted and re-worked so the surface keeps its relief instead of being smeared.

One practical note: because the light comes from behind, a Turner needs a wall with its own light nearby. Under a lamp it glows; in a dark corner it goes dead.
