Van Gogh's The Bedroom in Arles — Hand-Painted Oil Reproduction

Painted to order in Dafen Village, Shenzhen · Vincent van Gogh, 1888 · Public domain · Est. $369–$1499

Van Gogh painted The Bedroom in October 1888 for the one room in the Yellow House that was actually his own, and he wanted it to say “rest” above everything else. It became one of the most loved interiors in art — and one of the most commonly miscopied, because its deliberate flatness is far harder to paint than it looks.

Why the perspective is deliberately wrong

Van Gogh compressed the perspective on purpose. The walls tilt, the floor slopes, and the furniture has almost no cast shadow — he told Theo he had “flattened” it all so the room would rest the eye. A copyist who corrects the angles out of habit produces a technically tidy room that feels nothing like the original.

The colour is the other trap: the walls are a pale, slightly greyed violet that goes chalky if mixed too white, and the bed is laid in thick, matte yellow ochre with almost no modelling. We rebuild the room in the original order — flat wall passes first, furniture in loaded strokes on top — so the canvas keeps the hush the painting was made for.

There is a test we encourage buyers to use on any "oil painting" they are offered: run a fingernail very gently across the surface. A hand-painted canvas feels like terrain. A print feels like glass.

The painting itself

He painted it in Arles in October 1888, just after Gauguin agreed to come and share the Yellow House, and described it to Theo as “my bedroom” — plain wooden furniture, a green window, portraits on the wall, and nothing else. It was the first room that ever felt fully his own.

He thought so much of the idea that he painted the scene three times: the 1888 original now in the Van Gogh Museum, and two 1889 versions in Chicago and Paris. Because the original is a modest 72 × 90 cm, we most often paint it at 60 × 75 cm or the exact original size, where the intimacy of the composition works best.

How our painters reproduce it

Our studio is in Dafen Oil Painting Village, Shenzhen — the centre of hand-painted oil reproduction for more than thirty years. A The Bedroom in Arles here is not traced, projected or transferred. The painter works freehand from a high-resolution reference, in layers:

  1. Composition and ground. The canvas is toned and the main forms laid out in a thin underpainting, matching the original proportions to your chosen size.
  2. Colour build-up. The palette is mixed in oil, not acrylic — only oil gives the same depth, slow blending and the slightly translucent glow the original depends on.
  3. Impasto and surface passes. The signature strokes go on last, loaded with paint, following the direction of the original's brushwork. This is the slowest and most skilful stage.
  4. Drying and inspection. Layered oil needs days to set properly. We let it. Then the finished canvas is checked against the reference for colour, composition and stroke character.

Where it hangs best

The painting Van Gogh made to feel like rest — flat on purpose, and easy to get wrong. Rooms our customers choose most often:

Framing

Choose gold to echo the original's warmth, matte black for a contemporary room, walnut for a traditional interior, or no frame at all as a gallery-wrap canvas ready to hang. Frames are quoted separately and packed with corner protection.

Honest labelling: this is a faithful hand-painted reproduction, not an original and not a museum-licensed copy. The image on this page is a public-domain scan of the original work, shown for reference. Your canvas is painted by hand to order and we send photographs of your actual painting for approval before it ships. Van Gogh died in 1890 and the work is in the public domain, so hand-painted reproductions of The Bedroom are legal to commission and own worldwide — we never sell it as an original and never issue fake certificates of authenticity.
