The church body sits in deep ultramarine-violet, the roof in near-black blue, and the sky behind is the purest cobalt he ever laid down. None of these colours touch each other in real life — the whole tension of the painting is that they do on the canvas. Mix them carelessly and the violet goes muddy or the sky goes flat.
We mix the violet warm, keep the cobalt unmuddied, and lay the sky in the thick, straight strokes that make the original so physical. The windows are outlined in pink and ultramarine dabs last, exactly the order the original was built — that sequencing is what keeps the church from reading purple-brown.
There is a test we encourage buyers to use on any "oil painting" they are offered: run a fingernail very gently across the surface. A hand-painted canvas feels like terrain. A print feels like glass.
The painting itself
After leaving the asylum at Saint-Rémy in May 1890, Van Gogh moved to Auvers-sur-Oise to be near Dr. Gachet, and painted furiously for seventy days before his death in July. The church was one of his first Auvers subjects, and he described it in a letter: violet against a sky of deep, simple cobalt, the stained-glass windows as ultramarine blotches.
He also wrote that the church had become almost like the poor village churches of his Dutch years, and that the forked path in front seemed to say the same thing. We most often paint it at 60 × 75 cm, close to the original 94 × 74 cm proportion, where the vertical pull of the tower works best.
How our painters reproduce it
Our studio is in Dafen Oil Painting Village, Shenzhen — the centre of hand-painted oil reproduction for more than thirty years. A The Church at Auvers here is not traced, projected or transferred. The painter works freehand from a high-resolution reference, in layers:
- Composition and ground. The canvas is toned and the main forms laid out in a thin underpainting, matching the original proportions to your chosen size.
- Colour build-up. The palette is mixed in oil, not acrylic — only oil gives the same depth, slow blending and the slightly translucent glow the original depends on.
- Impasto and surface passes. The signature strokes go on last, loaded with paint, following the direction of the original's brushwork. This is the slowest and most skilful stage.
- Drying and inspection. Layered oil needs days to set properly. We let it. Then the finished canvas is checked against the reference for colour, composition and stroke character.
Where it hangs best
A village church split into violet and cobalt — painted in the last months of Van Gogh's life. Rooms our customers choose most often:
- Study or library — a painting that rewards looking, not just filling a wall
- Living room — above a console where the cobalt can breathe
- Hallway — the vertical tower suits narrow walls
- Hospitality — restaurants and lounges with a darker, moody palette
Framing
Choose gold to echo the original's warmth, matte black for a contemporary room, walnut for a traditional interior, or no frame at all as a gallery-wrap canvas ready to hang. Frames are quoted separately and packed with corner protection.

How much does it cost?
Est. $369–$1499 depending on canvas size, from 16 × 20 in up to 47 × 63 in. Frame and shipping quoted separately.
