Katsushika Hokusai — Hand-Painted Oil Reproductions

Hokusai made woodblock prints, and we repaint them in oil — which is not a downgrade. In oil the Prussian blue gains depth, the foam gains real body, and the image becomes a painting instead of a poster on your wall.

Katsushika Hokusai paintings we have in stock

Every canvas below is painted by hand in oil on real artist canvas by our studio painters in Dafen Village, Shenzhen. Pick a size, pick a frame, and we send photographs of the finished painting for your approval before anything ships.

Honest labelling: these are faithful hand-painted reproductions, not originals and not museum-licensed copies. Hokusai died in 1849 and his work is in the public domain, so commissioning a hand-painted copy is legal worldwide. We never sell them as anything else and we issue no fake certificates of authenticity.

Why repainting a print in oil is worth doing

A woodblock print is flat by nature: ink pressed onto paper, one colour block at a time, with hard edges where each block met the next. That flatness is part of its beauty — but it is also why a framed print on a wall can look thin.

In oil we can build the Prussian blue in two or three depths, deep in the trough of a wave and pale where the light crosses the crest, so the water has volume. The foam can be laid thick with a knife so the claws stand off the canvas and throw a shadow. Under a picture light, the wave moves. What we keep from the print is the crisp outline — soft edges are what ruin this image.

How our painters reproduce Hokusai

  1. Crisp drawing. The outline is transferred by hand and kept sharp. This is the one painter where we insist on a hard edge.
  2. Flat colour fields. The sky, the mountain and the boats are laid in flat, even colour, exactly as the blocks would have printed them.
  3. Depth in the blue. Only the water gets modelling — two or three grades of Prussian blue, worked wet into wet.
  4. Knife-work foam. The claws go on last, thick and white, so they catch light and read as spray rather than as paper.

Every finished canvas is photographed and checked against the original before it is offered to you for approval.

Are these real hand-painted Hokusai reproductions or prints?

They are 100% hand-painted in oil on artist canvas by studio painters in Dafen Village, Shenzhen. We repaint the woodblock composition in oil — no printing, no transfer, no giclée.

How much does a hand-painted Hokusai cost?

Est. $369 to $1,499 depending mainly on canvas size, from 16 x 20 in up to 47 x 63 in. Framing and shipping are quoted separately. Send us the print and size for an exact quote.

Can I order a Hokusai that is not listed here?

Yes. Send us the name of any print from Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji or his other series — Red Fuji, Rainstorm Beneath the Summit, the waterfalls, the bridges — and we will hand-paint it to your size in oil.

Is it legal to buy a Hokusai reproduction?

Yes. Hokusai died in 1849 and his work is in the public domain, so hand-painted reproductions are legal to commission and own worldwide. We sell them clearly as reproductions, never as originals.

How long does it take?

Most take 2 to 4 weeks depending on size and the studio queue. The flat colour fields are quick; the knife-work foam needs to dry properly. The timeline is confirmed in writing before any deposit.

Do you ship worldwide?

Yes, worldwide by tracked courier, typically DHL or FedEx, rolled in a rigid tube or crated stretched and framed. Import duties and taxes are the buyer's responsibility (DAP).
