Van Gogh's The Starry Night — Hand-Painted Oil Reproduction

Painted to order in Dafen Village, Shenzhen · Vincent van Gogh, 1889 · Public domain · Est. $369–$1499

Van Gogh painted The Starry Night at Saint-Rémy in June 1889, and it is now the most reproduced oil painting on earth. That is exactly the argument for having it done properly: nearly every version on the market is a print, and a print throws away the one thing the painting actually is — movement.

Why a print cannot do this painting

Every stroke in The Starry Night is doing directional work: the sky turns in long curling ribbons, the stars sit inside haloes painted in short radiating dabs, and the village below is laid in flatter, calmer marks so the eye has somewhere to rest.

A print reproduces the colour and the composition but none of the direction. The sky collapses into a blue pattern, the star haloes become printed rings, and the canvas stops being the thing Van Gogh made. Under a picture light, ours still moves.

There is a test we encourage buyers to use on any "oil painting" they are offered: run a fingernail very gently across the surface. A hand-painted canvas feels like terrain. A print feels like glass.

The painting itself

Van Gogh painted it in the asylum at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in June 1889, working from memory and from the view out of his east-facing window — the hill, the cypress, and a village he told his brother Theo he did not need to see in order to paint it.

What makes it hard is the control involved. Eleven stars and a crescent moon have to sit inside a sky that is somehow both calm and churning, and the cypress has to read as flame-like without flattening into a silhouette. At 80 × 100 cm our painters spend roughly three weeks building the surface in the same order the original was built.

How our painters reproduce it

Our studio is in Dafen Oil Painting Village, Shenzhen — the centre of hand-painted oil reproduction for more than thirty years. A The Starry Night here is not traced, projected or transferred. The painter works freehand from a high-resolution reference, in layers:

  1. Composition and ground. The canvas is toned and the main forms laid out in a thin underpainting, matching the original proportions to your chosen size.
  2. Colour build-up. The palette is mixed in oil, not acrylic — only oil gives the same depth, slow blending and the slightly translucent glow the original depends on.
  3. Impasto and surface passes. The signature strokes go on last, loaded with paint, following the direction of the original's brushwork. This is the slowest and most skilful stage.
  4. Drying and inspection. Layered oil needs days to set properly. We let it. Then the finished canvas is checked against the reference for colour, composition and stroke character.

Where it hangs best

The single most requested canvas in our studio — and the one that separates a real painter from a printer. Rooms our customers choose most often:

Framing

Choose gold to echo the original's warmth, matte black for a contemporary room, walnut for a traditional interior, or no frame at all as a gallery-wrap canvas ready to hang. Frames are quoted separately and packed with corner protection.

How ordering works

  1. Tell us the painting, size and frame. WhatsApp is fastest — include a wall photo if you want sizing advice.
  2. Get an exact quote. Usually within the hour, with the timeline confirmed in writing.
  3. 70% deposit starts the painting. Paid by bank transfer, PayPal, credit card or Wise.
  4. We send photographs of the finished painting. You review it before anything ships. If something clearly does not match your order notes, tell us and we adjust it.
  5. Pay the 30% balance, then we ship. Tracked worldwide courier, rolled in a rigid tube or crated if framed.
Honest labelling: this is a faithful hand-painted reproduction, not an original and not a museum-licensed copy. The image on this page is a public-domain scan of the original work, shown for reference. Your canvas is painted by hand to order and we send photographs of your actual painting for approval before it ships. Van Gogh died in 1890 and the paintings are in the public domain, so hand-painted reproductions are legal to commission and own worldwide — we never sell it as an original and never issue fake certificates of authenticity.
