Edgar Degas — Hand-Painted Oil Reproductions

Degas painted the rehearsal, not the performance — the waiting, the stretch, the scratch of a back. He said no art was less spontaneous than his, and you can see why: the tilted floor, the empty walls and the thin milky tulle are all calculated, and they are what make the dancers look fragile rather than decorative.

Edgar Degas paintings we have in stock

Every canvas below is painted by hand in oil on real artist canvas by our studio painters in Dafen Village, Shenzhen. Pick a size, pick a frame, and we send photographs of the finished painting for your approval before anything ships.

Honest labelling: these are faithful hand-painted reproductions, not originals and not museum-licensed copies. Degas died in 1917 and his work is in the public domain, so commissioning a hand-painted copy is legal worldwide. We never sell them as anything else and we issue no fake certificates of authenticity.

Why the tulle decides whether a Degas works

The tutus are painted as thin, milky layers — pale blue-green over warm grey, dragged thinly so the ground shows through and the fabric reads as translucent rather than white. That is the whole illusion. A printer makes the skirts solid white and the ribbons flat pink, and the canvas turns into a poster about ballet instead of a painting about light through fabric.

The other half of the problem is the darks. Large areas of shadow have to stay warm and thin, with the brush following the direction of the floorboards, or the foreground becomes dead black and the dancers appear to float on nothing. Painting a big dark area that still looks like a surface is far harder than painting light.

How our painters reproduce Degas

  1. Room first. The tilted floor and the empty walls are laid in before any figure, because the perspective decides whether the space convinces.
  2. Warm, thin darks. Shadow is underpainted warm and glazed, never blocked in as black.
  3. Tulle last and thin. The skirts go on as translucent layers, with the thickest paint saved for the brightest tutu in the row.
  4. Checked under raking light. Every canvas is photographed and compared with the original before we send it to you for approval.

Degas suits quiet rooms — a bedroom, a reading corner, a dressing room — and he is the single most requested painter for dance studios.
