Gustav Klimt — Hand-Painted Oil Reproductions

Klimt was a gold engraver's son, and he treated gold leaf the way other painters treat pigment. That is why his work is the hardest of all to print: the light does not sit on the surface, it comes back out of it. Every canvas here is built in real metallic layers.

Gustav Klimt paintings we have in stock

Every canvas below is painted by hand in oil on real artist canvas by our studio painters in Dafen Village, Shenzhen. Pick a size, pick a frame, and we send photographs of the finished painting for your approval before anything ships.

Honest labelling: these are faithful hand-painted reproductions, not originals and not museum-licensed copies. Klimt died in 1918 and his work is in the public domain, so commissioning a hand-painted copy is legal worldwide. We never sell them as anything else and we issue no fake certificates of authenticity.

Why a printed Klimt never works

Klimt's gold is not yellow paint. It is genuine gold leaf, laid over a warm underpainting and worked with scratched and stamped ornament. Turn the canvas slightly and the gold shifts from warm to pale, which is the effect the whole painting depends on. A print gives you flat mustard instead, and the ornament arrives as a slightly blurred repeat.

The second thing a print loses is the collision Klimt set up on purpose. In the Adele Bloch-Bauer portrait the face and hands are modelled realistically in ordinary oil, while the dress and background are flat decorative units with no modelling at all. That contrast — a person inside a field of material — is the argument of the painting, and only real paint keeps it.

How our painters reproduce Klimt

  1. Ground and drawing. Artist-grade canvas, sized and primed, with the composition drawn in thin umber — freehand, never projected from a print.
  2. Underpainting. A warm ground goes beneath every gold passage. This is what stops the leaf from reading as yellow later.
  3. Ornament and flesh. The realistic passages are modelled first and allowed to set, then the flat decorative units are painted crisp on top so the edges stay sharp.
  4. The gold pass. Metallic leaf and warm glazes are worked last, in thin layers, so the surface reads as metal rather than colour.

Every finished canvas is photographed and checked against the original before it is offered to you for approval.

FAQ

Are these real hand-painted Klimt reproductions or prints?

They are 100% hand-painted in oil with gold leaf on artist canvas by studio painters in Dafen Village, Shenzhen. No printing, no canvas transfer, no giclée.

Is the gold real gold leaf?

We work the gold passages in metallic leaf and warm glazes over a prepared ground, so the surface reflects light like metal rather than sitting flat like printed yellow. This is what separates a painted Klimt from a printed one.

How much does a hand-painted Klimt cost?

Est. $369 to $1,499 depending mainly on canvas size, from 16 x 20 in up to 47 x 63 in. Framing and shipping are quoted separately. Send us the painting and size for an exact quote.

Can I order a Klimt that is not listed here?

Yes. Send us the name of any Klimt work — Tree of Life, Danaë, The Virgin, the Stoclet Frieze panels — and we will hand-paint it to your size.

Is it legal to buy a Klimt reproduction?

Yes. Klimt died in 1918 and his work is in the public domain, so hand-painted reproductions are legal to commission and own worldwide. We sell them clearly as reproductions, never as originals, with no fake certificate of authenticity.

How long does it take?

Most take 2 to 4 weeks depending on size and the studio queue. The gold layers need proper drying time. The timeline is confirmed in writing before any deposit.
