Why Renoir's sunlight is not white
The sunspots falling through the leaves at the Moulin de la Galette are warm notes — cream, pink, pale gold — sitting on top of a shadow that is already full of violet and blue-green. That contrast of temperature is what makes the light feel like afternoon sun rather than a lamp. Painters who mix the light as pale grey get a flat, washed scene.
The second trap is the skin. Renoir almost never let a shadow go brown; the shaded side of a face stays pink, violet or greenish, which is why his crowds look alive in a way later academic painting does not. It is the single most useful thing to know before commissioning him.
How our painters reproduce Renoir
- Shadow first, in colour. The shadow passages are blocked in violet and blue-green before any light goes down — never grey, never brown.
- Light as separate strokes. Each sun patch is mixed on the palette and laid beside the shadow, not blended into it, so the edge stays broken the way leaves break light.
- Soft everywhere, sharp nowhere. Renoir's contours dissolve. Our painters are told to stop before an edge forms.
- Checked in daylight. Every finished canvas is photographed under neutral light and compared with the original before we send it to you for approval.
Because the surface is built from separate strokes rather than smooth blending, a Renoir gains more than most paintings from being seen in person — it is the reason people keep asking for him on canvas instead of paper.

FAQ
Are these real hand-painted Renoir reproductions or prints?
They are 100% hand-painted in oil on artist canvas by studio painters in Dafen Village, Shenzhen. No printing, no canvas transfer, no giclée.
How much does a hand-painted Renoir cost?
Est. $369 to $1,499 depending mainly on canvas size, from 16 x 20 in up to 47 x 63 in. Framing and shipping are quoted separately. Send us the painting and size for an exact quote.
Can I order a Renoir that is not listed here?
Yes. Send us the name of any Renoir work — Two Sisters, The Swing, La Loge, Nude in the Sun, the portraits of Aline — and we will hand-paint it to your size.
Is it legal to buy a Renoir reproduction?
Yes. Renoir died in 1919, so his paintings are in the public domain in most jurisdictions and hand-painted reproductions are legal to commission and own. We sell them clearly as reproductions, never as originals, with no fake certificate of authenticity.
How long does it take?
Most take 3 to 5 weeks depending on size and the studio queue. A crowded group scene like the Boating Party takes longer than a single figure. The timeline is confirmed in writing before any deposit.
Do you ship worldwide?
Yes, worldwide by tracked courier, typically DHL or FedEx, rolled in a rigid tube or crated stretched and framed. Import duties and taxes are the buyer's responsibility (DAP).
