Edvard Munch — Hand-Painted Oil Reproductions

Munch painted feeling rather than appearance, and he did it with the simplest possible means: thin paint, long strokes that refuse to blend, and colour chosen for anxiety rather than accuracy. It is the most emotional wall you can commission.

Edvard Munch paintings we have in stock

Every canvas below is painted by hand in oil on real artist canvas by our studio painters in Dafen Village, Shenzhen. Pick a size, pick a frame, and we send photographs of the finished painting for your approval before anything ships.

Honest labelling: these are faithful hand-painted reproductions, not originals and not museum-licensed copies. Munch died in 1944 and his work is in the public domain, so commissioning a hand-painted copy is legal worldwide. We never sell them as anything else and we issue no fake certificates of authenticity.

Why Munch is the wrong painter to overwork

The instinct of most copyists is to make an image more finished. With Munch that is fatal. He worked in thin paint, almost like poster colour, dragging long bands of red and orange across a sky and never blending them. The bands have to stay separate — that refusal to blend is what makes the sky feel like it is vibrating.

The second instinct to suppress is detail in the face. The moment the features are resolved, the figure becomes a person pulling a funny expression instead of every person who has ever felt that way. Our painters are told to leave it alone.

How our painters reproduce Munch

  1. Flat ground. Munch's surfaces are thin and matte, so the ground is kept smooth and the paint is not thickened later.
  2. Long directional bands. The sky goes on first in long strokes, each colour mixed separately and laid beside rather than into the last one.
  3. The diagonal. The bridge rail in The Scream is a single sweeping line that carries the whole composition off the edge. It is drawn once and not corrected.
  4. Stop early. The hardest stage. Overworking is what turns a Munch into a copy of a Munch.

Every finished canvas is photographed and checked against the original before it is offered to you for approval.
