Johannes Vermeer — Hand-Painted Oil Reproductions

Vermeer left only about thirty-four paintings and worked slower than almost anyone, on pigments that cost more than gold by weight. His canvases are quiet, and that is exactly why they are hard: with almost nothing in them, every mark has to be exactly placed.

Johannes Vermeer paintings we have in stock

Every canvas below is painted by hand in oil on real artist canvas by our studio painters in Dafen Village, Shenzhen. Pick a size, pick a frame, and we send photographs of the finished painting for your approval before anything ships.

Honest labelling: these are faithful hand-painted reproductions, not originals and not museum-licensed copies. Vermeer died in 1675 and his work is in the public domain, so commissioning a hand-painted copy is legal worldwide. We never sell them as anything else and we issue no fake certificates of authenticity.

Why a printed Vermeer fails quietly

Vermeer's effects are almost all a matter of paint thickness and pigment choice. In The Milkmaid the bread crusts are built up with lead-white impasto, tiny dabs standing off the canvas that catch light from the window, while everything on the shadowed side is thin and transparent. In Girl with a Pearl Earring the pearl itself is two strokes of white with no outline at all — it reads as a sphere purely because of where those two marks sit.

Printing destroys both. Impasto becomes a slightly lighter patch of beige, and the pearl becomes a grey circle with a dot on it. The natural ultramarine of the turban and the milkmaid's skirt — ground from lapis lazuli, with a granularity no modern blue matches — goes flat navy.

How our painters reproduce Vermeer

  1. Toned ground. A warm mid-tone ground, as Vermeer used, so the thin shadow passages have something to sit against.
  2. Drawing and blocking. The composition is drawn thin and the big masses blocked in, with the light direction fixed from the very first pass.
  3. Glazing. Colour is built in transparent layers, two or three passes for the blues, which is how the original gets its depth.
  4. Impasto last. The thick highlights — crusts, the pearl, the catchlight in an eye — go on last and stand off the surface.

Every finished canvas is photographed and checked against the original before it is offered to you for approval.
