Leonardo da Vinci — Hand-Painted Oil Reproductions

Leonardo painted with almost no lines. His edges are made from dozens of translucent glazes, which is why his faces seem to change expression as you move past them — and why a printed Leonardo is a completely different object from a painted one.

Leonardo da Vinci paintings we have in stock

Every canvas below is painted by hand in oil on real artist canvas by our studio painters in Dafen Village, Shenzhen. Pick a size, pick a frame, and we send photographs of the finished painting for your approval before anything ships.

Honest labelling: these are faithful hand-painted reproductions, not originals and not museum-licensed copies. Leonardo died in 1519 and his work is in the public domain, so commissioning a hand-painted copy is legal worldwide. We never sell them as anything else and we issue no fake certificates of authenticity.

Why sfumato cannot be printed

Sfumato is the technique Leonardo carried further than anyone: instead of drawing an edge, he laid down as many as thirty layers of glaze, each almost transparent, so the contour between mouth and cheek dissolves into shadow. Nothing in the painting is outlined, which is why the expression shifts depending on where you stand.

Printing averages all those layers into one tone. The mouth becomes a drawn curve, the eyes get lids with edges, and the face fixes into a single expression instead of hovering between several. Painted in glazes on canvas, the ambiguity survives — and the ambiguity is the painting.

How our painters reproduce Leonardo

  1. Warm ground. A mid-tone ground, as Leonardo used, so the thin shadow passages have something to sit against rather than going muddy.
  2. Thin underpainting. The composition is laid in thinly and allowed to set. No heavy paint at this stage — anything thick now will fight the glazes later.
  3. Glazing. Colour is built in transparent passes, sometimes a dozen for a single cheek. Each pass has to dry before the next goes on.
  4. No outlines, ever. The final stage is softening. Our painters deliberately kill every hard edge on the face, which is the hardest instruction to follow and the reason a Leonardo takes longer than its size suggests.

Every finished canvas is photographed and checked against the original before it is offered to you for approval.

How much does a hand-painted Leonardo cost?

Est. $369 to $1,499 depending mainly on canvas size, from 16 x 20 in up to 47 x 63 in. Framing and shipping are quoted separately. Send us the painting and size for an exact quote.

Can I order a Leonardo that is not listed here?

Yes. Send us the name of any Leonardo work — Lady with an Ermine, Salvator Mundi, The Virgin of the Rocks, Vitruvian Man as a painted panel — and we will hand-paint it to your size.
