Rembrandt — Hand-Painted Oil Reproductions

Rembrandt built his paintings out of two opposite kinds of paint: shadow that is thin enough to see into, and highlight that is thick enough to catch the light. That contrast is the technique, and it is entirely a matter of what the brush leaves on the canvas.

Rembrandt van Rijn paintings we have in stock

Every canvas below is painted by hand in oil on real artist canvas by our studio painters in Dafen Village, Shenzhen. Pick a size, pick a frame, and we send photographs of the finished painting for your approval before anything ships.

Honest labelling: these are faithful hand-painted reproductions, not originals and not museum-licensed copies. Rembrandt died in 1669 and his work is in the public domain, so commissioning a hand-painted copy is legal worldwide. We never sell them as anything else and we issue no fake certificates of authenticity.

Why Rembrandt's darks are the test of a painter

A bad Rembrandt copy is easy to spot from across a room, and it is always the same failure: the shadows are painted with black. Rembrandt never used black for shadow. His darks are warm browns built from thin transparent layers over a mid-tone ground, with red and ochre moving through them, so you can see into the darkness instead of staring at a hole.

The lit passages are the opposite — lead-white and yellow loaded thick, sometimes standing several millimetres off the canvas. Put the two together and you get chiaroscuro. A printed canvas has one paint thickness, so it can only mimic the effect, never produce it.

How our painters reproduce Rembrandt

  1. Warm mid-tone ground. Everything that will later be shadow is decided here. Get the ground wrong and the darks go dead no matter what goes on top.
  2. Shadow architecture. The dark passages are laid thin and transparent in two or three passes, with warm colour kept moving through them.
  3. The light. Highlights go on last and thickest, often with a knife, following the single light source the original was built around.
  4. Glazing to unify. A final thin warm glaze ties the whole canvas together, which is what gives a Rembrandt its brown-gold atmosphere.

Every finished canvas is photographed and checked against the original before it is offered to you for approval.
