Why a painted portrait outlasts every other gift
A phone is replaced in three years. A sweater is worn out. A gift card is forgotten by February. An oil portrait is the rare gift that gets more valuable with time, because the subject matter — a dog who is twelve, a grandmother at eighty, a child's face one particular year — is not repeatable. And unlike a framed photograph, oil paint does not fade, does not sit behind glass reflecting the room, and carries the marks of a human hand.
There is a second reason it lands hard at Christmas specifically: it is the only gift on the tree that required somebody to think months ahead and source photographs in secret. Recipients work that out within about four seconds of unwrapping it.
When to order for Christmas — planning backwards from December 25
This is the part people get wrong, so let's be blunt: oil paint needs time, and there is no honest way around it. A portrait is built in layers, each one has to set before the next goes on, and shipping from China to Europe or North America takes several days even before customs is involved.
Work backwards like this:
| Stage | Typical time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Quote, photo review and booking | 1–2 days | Usually same day on WhatsApp. Nothing starts until you approve a written quote. |
| Painting | 2–4 weeks | Depends on size, number of subjects and how busy the studio queue is in November. |
| Your approval of the finished-painting photos | Up to you | You see photos of the finished work before it ships, and tell us if anything needs adjusting. |
| Packing and international courier | Roughly 1–2 weeks | Tracked DHL or FedEx. Customs clearance at your end varies by country and season. |
Add those up and the comfortable window to start a Christmas commission is October and early November. Late November is tight but sometimes workable for smaller canvases. If it genuinely cannot be done in time, we tell you before you pay anything rather than taking the deposit and hoping — see the card trick below for how to still have something under the tree.
Portrait gift ideas for pet lovers
Pet portraits are the most-gifted category we paint, and the reaction is reliably the strongest. A few directions that work particularly well as gifts:
The dog, painted properly
The classic — and it never misses. Send the photo where the ears are doing something characteristic, or the one taken in the park at golden hour. Our painters work from a phone snapshot and rebuild the coat in layered oil so the fur has direction and depth rather than a smooth blur. Full guide to realistic dog portraits →

The cat who runs the house
Cat owners are, if anything, more devoted than dog owners — and harder to buy for, because cat-themed merchandising tends to be jokey. A straight, dignified oil portrait of their cat is the opposite of jokey. Plain background works beautifully; so does something more theatrical if their humour runs that way.

Two pets, one canvas
If they have two animals, combining them beats commissioning two separate portraits — one frame, one hook in the wall, and the two of them finally side by side. Very often they have no good photo of both together, which is fine: we compose them from separate shots with consistent lighting.

Horses and the rest of the family
Horses, parrots, rabbits, even the occasional bearded dragon. If someone's whole personality orbits an animal that is not a dog or a cat, this is the gift nobody else will have thought of.

The "rainbow bridge" gift — for a pet who died this year
Be warned: this one produces tears in front of relatives. A memorial portrait for someone whose dog or cat died during the year is the most emotionally loaded gift we paint, and the one people email us about years later. Backgrounds are chosen to suit: their favourite walk, a soft sky, something symbolic. Tell us up front that it is a memorial so your painter treats it with the weight it deserves. A softer, lighter treatment — a pet painted against a bright rainbow — can help when children are in the room.

Two minutes is enough to get started — send the photo of the pet, and roughly how big you want it.

Painting a person is harder than painting a pet and lands differently — which is why it tends to be given at the biggest moments.
Their wedding photo, finally painted
Ask any couple married twenty years what they actually have from the day: an album nobody opens. A single photo from that album, enlarged to oil on canvas in the right frame, becomes the centrepiece of a living room instead of a page nobody turns. No posy-gripping awkwardness required — often it's the blurry one taken afterwards that makes the better painting.

Parents and grandparents
For parents who insist they "don't want anything", a portrait is the override. The strongest version is the three-generation one — grandparents with the grandkids — because those four people are rarely in the same frame with everyone looking decent. We compose it from separate photos if necessary.

The child, this year
Kids change so fast that a painted portrait freezes exactly the age you chose. It is a popular gift from grandparents rather than to them, and works from a school photo if that's all you have.

Someone who isn't here this Christmas
The first Christmas after a loss is the hardest, and it is the moment a painted portrait does the most work. Done from an old photograph — even a small, creased studio portrait from decades ago — it puts that person back in the room for the celebration rather than only in conversation. Our painters routinely work from damaged or low-resolution originals and can reconstruct missing detail.

The person who has everything
There is always one. The reliable answer is not another object — it is something that only exists because you made it: their childhood holiday snap, the first house they owned, the boat, the view from their kitchen window. How custom-from-photo works →

How to get the photo without ruining the surprise
Every secret portrait starts with the same problem: the best photos are on someone else's phone. Some things that have worked for our customers:
- Go through shared albums and cloud backups. Family-shared photo libraries and old group chats usually hold hundreds of usable shots nobody has looked at in years.
- Ask their partner or flatmate. Frame it as "I need a good photo of X for something" — people assume a slideshow or a card and hand over their best shots happily.
- Take one yourself over the next few weeks. For pets especially, a photo taken at their eye level in daylight beats any archive shot. Get down on the floor, wait for the ears.
- Screenshot their social media. It is their camera roll, effectively. Higher resolution than most people expect, and it will not alert anybody.
- Send us three options. We will tell you which one paints best and why — usually it comes down to light direction, how visible the eyes are, and how much of the coat or hair is in focus.

Choosing the size
When you cannot measure the recipient's wall, go by how the gift will be used:
| Gift situation | Canvas size | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A desk or bedside surprise | 30 × 40 cm / 12 × 16 in | Small enough to unwrap at a table, still clearly a painting. |
| Most popular for a single pet or one person | 40 × 50 cm / 16 × 20 in | Reads clearly at arm's length and fits almost any room. |
| Their main living-room wall | 60 × 80 cm / 24 × 32 in | Big enough to be the first thing you see entering the room. |
| Two or three subjects together | 70 × 100 cm / 28 × 39 in | Extra width so faces stay life-size rather than shrinking. |
| Family / statement wall, principal gift | 90 × 120 cm / 36 × 48 in | Gallery-scale; the gift that redecorates the room. |
Any size in between is fine. If you are unsure, send a photo of the wall plus rough furniture measurements and we will advise — free, and usually answered the same day. Sizing guide →
Frames: how gift-ready it looks on arrival
A portrait arrives either stretched ready to hang, or framed. For gifting, framed is usually worth it — it comes out of the box looking finished. Options:
- Gold leaf frame — classical, warm, the traditional portrait look; suits formal sitting rooms and older photographs.
- Matte black frame — modern and clean; excellent for contemporary interiors and black-and-white source photos.
- Walnut wood frame — warm neutral; the safest choice when you do not know their taste.
- Unframed gallery-wrap — canvas stretched on deep bars with painted edges, no frame needed; the easiest to reframe locally later.

More on frames in our framing guide.
Shipping, wrapping and the "print it in a card" trick
The finished canvas is wrapped in acid-free paper, protected at the corners, then packed in a rigid carton (or a crate for the largest sizes) and shipped by tracked courier — typically DHL or FedEx. We normally ship to you, not straight to the recipient, for one simple reason: you should open the box first, check it, and wrap it yourself so it looks like something rather than like freight. Tell us if you want it sent directly to them instead and we will quote that.
If the canvas will not make December 25: order it anyway. When the painting is finished we send you photographs of it — print one, put it in a Christmas card or a small frame, and hand that over on the day. Plenty of our customers prefer this even when there is time, because the reveal is the gift and the canvas arrives in January as the encore.
What affects the price
We quote each commission individually rather than publishing a price list, because the honest answer depends on three things:
- Size — the biggest factor. A 90 × 120 cm canvas takes many more studio hours than a 40 × 50 cm one.
- Number of subjects — two dogs, or a family of five, means proportionally more work than a single head-and-shoulders.
- Background and finish — a plain tonal background is the most economical; a full scenic or themed background adds painter's hours. Frames are quoted together with the canvas.
There is no minimum order and no obligation on a quote. Send size + how many subjects + frame preference and you will have a firm written figure back on WhatsApp. If you want the reasoning behind the numbers, this guide breaks down custom painting costs honestly.
How commissioning works, step by step
- Send the photo(s) and your gift date on WhatsApp. We look at what you have, tell you which photo paints best, and quote size options in writing.
- 50% deposit to start — via a secure payment link. This reserves studio time and materials.
- Your painter works from your photo. Freehand, in oil, in layers over roughly 2–4 weeks.
- You see photographs of the finished painting. Happy with it? Pay the 50% balance and we pack it. Want something changed — eyes, background colour, a stray whisker? Tell us and we adjust it.
- Shipping. Packed, tracked and on its way to you worldwide. Import duties and taxes at the destination are the buyer's responsibility (DAP).
FAQ
When should I order a portrait oil painting to have it by Christmas?
Earlier than most people expect. Allow time for painting, your approval of the finished-painting photos, and international shipping. Send us your gift date and destination the moment you are thinking about it, and we will tell you honestly whether the canvas can be under the tree or whether the wrapping should hold a printed photo instead.
Can you really paint a portrait from one ordinary phone photo?
Yes. Most portrait commissions start from a single phone snapshot. Useful extras are a second photo from a different angle, a shot in daylight, and anything that shows eye colour and coat or hair texture clearly.
My pet died this year. Can you paint a memorial portrait as a gift?
Yes, and it is one of the commissions we take most seriously. Memorial pet portraits can be painted from old photos, from several partial shots combined into one pose, or with a themed background. Tell us it is a memorial when you write so your painter knows the context.
Can you combine people or pets who were never photographed together?
Yes. This is common for portraits of grandparents with grandchildren who live abroad, or of two pets who never shared a photo. Send separate photos of each subject and we compose them into one believable scene with consistent light direction.
Is it hand-painted or printed?
100% hand-painted in oil paint on artist-grade canvas by studio painters in Dafen Village, Shenzhen. No printing, no canvas transfers, no filters. You can feel the ridges of the brushwork with your fingertips. How to tell the difference →
How much does a custom portrait oil painting cost?
It depends mainly on canvas size, how many subjects are in the composition, and how detailed the background is. Tell us the size you want and how many people or pets, and we reply on WhatsApp with an exact quote rather than a price list.
How do I approve it before it ships?
When the painting is finished we send you photographs of the completed work. You approve it first, then pay the balance and we ship. If you want something adjusted after seeing the photos, tell us what to change and we adjust it.
How will it arrive, and can you ship straight to the recipient?
The stretched canvas is protected with acid-free paper and corner protectors, then boxed or crated and shipped worldwide by tracked courier. We normally ship to you first so you can wrap and hand it over yourself. Import duties and taxes in the destination country are the buyer's responsibility (DAP).
