Getting to the village
Dafen sits in Longgang District, in the northwest of Shenzhen. Most visitors arrive by metro and then take a short taxi or rideshare to the village entrance. It is easy to combine with a day of Shenzhen sightseeing, but give yourself at least half a day — the village is denser and more interesting than it looks on a map.
The studio streets
This is the heart of the visit. Lanes of open studios line both sides, canvases leaning against walls, painters at their easels, the smell of linseed and turpentine in the air. You will see everything from half-finished Van Goghs to pet portraits and abstract originals.
Unlike a gallery, nothing here is behind glass. You are inside the workshop. That is the point.
The museum and galleries
Beyond the working studios, Dafen has its own small art museum and a handful of galleries showing both reproductions and original contemporary work by local painters. It is worth a stop to see how the village frames its own story.

The wholesale corridors
Away from the tourist-facing streets, Dafen has long corridors stacked with finished canvases — the wholesale side that feeds export containers. You may not be buying by the hundred, but it is striking to see the scale.
Watching the painters
The most memorable part is simply watching. A painter layering thick impasto, a row of near-identical Monets each slightly different, an artist mixing the exact yellow of a sunflower — this is craft at scale.
Ordering a painting on the spot
You can absolutely leave with more than photos. Two routes:
- Buy finished: pick a canvas already on the wall and take it (or have it shipped).
- Commission: show a photo or a master you want copied, agree on size and frame, pay a 70% deposit to start, and we send finished-photo approval before the 30% balance and shipping.
