Why people commission a reproduction instead of buying a print

Most of us first see a Van Gogh or a Monet as a small image on a phone. A poster gets the picture across, but it never gets the feeling across. There is no texture. The brushstrokes that took the artist an afternoon are flattened into ink dots. Up close, a print tells you it is a print.

A hand-painted reproduction is different. The same composition is rebuilt with oil on canvas — layer by layer, stroke by stroke — by a studio painter who has studied the original. The impasto is real. The color depth is real. Hung at home, it reads as a painting, not as a print of a painting.

What "hand-painted museum copy" actually means

It means a studio artist paints the work on canvas with oil paints, working from a high-quality reference of the original. Not a scan. Not a transfer. Not a giclée print on canvas. The honest term is hand-painted reproduction; "museum copy" is the marketing name our industry uses.

This is what "hand-painted" looks like up close. The brushstrokes are raised; the color sits in physical layers.

Look at the surface and you can tell. In a real hand-painted reproduction, the paint is raised — you can feel ridges where the brush paused. The masters we regularly reproduce

Our painters work most often from the impressionists and post-impressionists — the artists whose visible brushwork is the whole point of the painting. Van Gogh, Monet, Klimt-style portraits, and the Dutch masters all reproduce well in oil because the texture is the message.

The honest truth about "museum copies"

There is no universal certification. The phrase "museum quality" is used by many studios with very different standards. Here is what we do and do not claim:

• We do paint by hand on artist-grade cotton or linen canvas, with oil paints (not acrylic), working from high-resolution references.
• We do match the composition, color palette, and visible brushwork of the source as faithfully as possible.
• We do not issue certificates of authenticity. A hand-painted reproduction is not the original work, and we will never pretend otherwise.
• We do not sell forgeries. Every reproduction is clearly sold as a reproduction.

How to choose the right size

Size is the easiest thing to get wrong. A Van Gogh that looks perfect in a museum can swallow a small apartment wall, or get lost on a large one. Here is the rule of thumb we use with customers:

Send us a photo of the wall with approximate dimensions and we will suggest the size that fits best.

Custom tweaks we can do (and cannot do)

We can

• Adjust dimensions up or down to fit your wall.
• Slightly crop the composition if a wall is taller than wide (or vice versa).
• Warm or cool the palette to match your interior lighting.
• Match or supply a frame in gold, black, walnut, or floating canvas (no frame).

We cannot

• Change the subject of the painting. It is what it is.
• Combine two paintings into one. Pick the one that means most to you.
• Reproduce works that are still under active copyright restrictions in your country in a way that violates those rights. When in doubt, ask.

What to send us when you order a reproduction

1. The painting you want (a link, a screenshot, or the artist's name + title).
2. The size you would like, or a photo of your wall with rough dimensions.
3. Frame preference (gold / black / walnut / no frame).
4. Anything else — color mood, deadline, gifting notes.

Timeline, shipping and care

Most reproductions take 2–4 weeks depending on size and studio queue. Once finished, the painting is photographed for your approval and then carefully packed: acid-free paper, corner protectors, double-walled cardboard, custom-built crate for large pieces. We ship worldwide by tracked courier (DHL or FedEx).

Care is straightforward: avoid direct sunlight, dust gently with a soft dry brush, never use household cleaners on the surface. Oil paint that has dried properly is remarkably stable.

Reproduction pricing depends on size, level of detail, and frame choice. Rather than post a price list that would only be approximate, we quote per order based on the painting you choose. Send us the painting + size + frame preference via WhatsApp and you will have a real number within an hour.
